Daily chart: newborn deaths. The number of deaths among babies is declining. In 2009 3.3m children died before they were four weeks old, down from 4.6m in 1990. Yet if current trends continue, neonatal mortality rates in Africa will still not reach the rich world’s levels until 2166.
Saw this when Tom posted it this morning. Good news that it’s on the decline - much more work to be done, and while child mortality is falling, baby mortality is declining at a much slower rate. 99% of all infant mortality occurs in developing nations, and most of these deaths are very easily preventable.
